Windows XP Restore Registry
Methods
There are several reasons why
you may need to perform Windows XP restore registry
tasks.
Some of these are:
a)
Repair the damage that has been caused to your XP registry due
to incorrect installation or un-installation of an
application.
b)
Repair registry keys that have become invalid or corrupt
because of a recent system crash.
c)
Remove malicious registry keys and entries that have been added
by virus or spyware.
d)
Undo certain modifications that may have been made while
editing the registry through the manual registry editor.
e)
Restore your registry after a previous scanning and repairing
procedure failed.
How you perform an XP restore registry is
mainly dependent upon the method you have used to backup the
registry. The following are some of the methods used to backup
your registry on a XP computer:
Backup Using the
Registry Editor or regedit Tool
Your XP operating system provides a utility known as regedit
that allows you to perform the backup of your registry. You can
choose to perform either a selective or complete backup of your
registry. In order to backup your registry, please follow the
instructions given below:
1.
Click the Start
menu of your Windows Desktop and choose Run. Type the word
RegEdit in the
box and click OK.
2.
When the Registry Editor window opens, select File from the menu and then
choose the Export
command.
3.
Enter the desired name of the new backup file that you want to
create in the box called File name.
4.
If you want to backup the complete registry, select the radio
button named All
under the Export
Range category.
5.
On the other hand, if you want only a selective backup of your
windows registry, enter the name of the branch of the registry
that you need to backup.
The backup is saved as a.reg file in the desired location. In
order to perform the windows XP restore registry task from this
backup, just navigate to the .reg file and double-click on it.
Click Yes to
confirm your decision. Although this method is reasonably
useful, it fails to restore any changes that may have occurred
after the backup was completed.
Backup Using System
Restore
Your Windows XP comes with a System Restore feature that takes
frequent snapshots of critical components of your PC including
its operating system, the Windows registry and the system
settings information. This tool is programmed to take the
snapshot every day and specifically before any installation or
un-installation of a large program has taken place. In System
Restore, go to Start Menu >>
All Programs
>> System
Tools >> System
Restore.
Follow the instructions on the XP restore registry process.
This process will revert the system files and settings to
the time when the snapshot you selected was taken.
Backup Using a
Third-party
Registry Cleaning Software:

for registry backup and restoration. These tools are fully
automatic and they make a backup of the registry prior to
undertaking any repairing task. You can also use these tools to
make manual registry backups that you can restore with just a
single click. This prevents a lot of hassles, especially for
amateur PC users. The latest generation of these automatic
registry tools also comes with selective backup feature. They
are immensely popular among computer users as they not only
help in backup and restoration but they also optimize the
overall performance of your computer by repairing a wide range
of various registry issues such as, system xp restore.
